Common Toilet Terms
What is the difference between S Trap & P Trap Toilets?
The S & P refer to the direction that the waste is extracted.
S Trap
means that the waste pipe goes out through the floor.
P Trap
means that the waste pipe goes out horizontally through the wall.
S Trap toilets are the most common in new building as the pipes are laid under the slabs.
P Traps are commonly used in extensions where it is not possible do go through though concrete slabs or in two story applications.
Bowl
This is the part of the toilet that you sit on. It also contains the trap, either S or P.
Cistern
This is the part where the flushing mechanism is housed. It sits above the bowl.
Set Back
also known as roughing-in . This is the term used to determine the distance that the toilet sits from the wall. It refers to S-Trap toilets. The measurement is taken from the wall to the center of the waste pipe. The most common set back used today is 140mm, however in reality it varies from about 100mm to 280mm. If your set back does not match the exact set back of the toilet you purchase, there are solutions. See Adjustable Collar below.
Collar
This is a plumbing fitting that fits directly onto the waste pipe, where the toilet fits into the pipe. It has a rubber ring which acts as a seal once the toilet is pushed into place.
Adjustable Collar
This is similar to a collar as above, however it is offset so that it will give approx 30mm play either way for instances where the set back does not match exactly that of the toilet. For eg, if the toilet set back is designed for 140mm, but your set back is 160mm an adjustable collar can make up this difference.
Waste Pipe
This is the pipe that carries all the waste away from the toilet and into the sewerage system. The standard size for a waste pipe in Australia 100mm, however this may vary. All our toilets come to suit a 100mm waste pipe.
Inlet Valve
This is where fresh water is connected and enters into the toilet cistern. In most cisterns this comes in via a connection on either the left or right bottom side of the cistern. In most cases this is interchangeable. Some toilets, e.g. The Venus, also have a top inlet valve. The benefit of this is that it totally conceals all plumbing to the toilet. If purchasing a Venus toilet and you would like a top inlet feed, it does not come with the toilet. It is an optional extra. Cost $50.
Close Coupled
Contrary to popular belief, this does not mean a husband and wife that do everything together. This is where the cistern of the toilet sits directly onto the bowl of the toilet. They join directly without a pipe. They are used to conceal all pluming, as opposed to the Link Suite or older style of toilets where there is an extension pipe from the cistern to the bowl. These are commonly used to replace older style toilets where the set back is quite a distance from the wall, e.g., over 240mm.
Link Suite
These are toilets where the cistern and bowl sit apart and are joined by a 40mm pipe. The pipe is adjustable and may be cut to length.
Flush to wall
This means that the rear of the toilet bowl & cistern sits right up against the wall. Therefore the waste pipe is totally concealed.
Dual Flush
This is where you have two buttons to flush the toilet. They are also known as a 3/6 combination. The first button will give a half flush and use only 3 liters of water. The second button will give a full flush and use 6 liters of water. These dual flush toilets are what is required if the government rebate on toilets is required.
Self Close Seats
This is a toilet seat set where the lid and seat are both fitted with a small mechanism that allows the seat to close under its own weight without slamming shut. Some toilets have the option of either seat.
NOTE: Always check with a plumber for all measurements etc. All plumbing must be carried out by a licensed plumber.
